If you suffer from joint pain, you know by now how much it can impair your ability to lead a normal life. Everyday activities such as walking, gardening, writing, playing with your children or grandchildren, or even walking your dog become painful or even impossible when dealing with knee, shoulder, and back pain. Needless to say, joint pain can have an isolating effect on a person, as little by little they are unable to perform the activities they once loved. The good news is, in 1991, the National Institutes of Health, as part of the Women’s Health Initiative, started the Estrogen-Alone program, which tested the effects of estrogen replacement on women. Participants were women between the ages of 50 to 79 who had undergone a hysterectomy. The study measured the results of estrogen versus a placebo therapy in the treatment of joint pain.
